Navigating the intersection of mental health and the legal system can be complex and challenging. At Mile High Psychology, our forensic psychology services are focused on addressing the psychological factors involved in legal cases.

Our assessment process, detailed reports, and expert testimony aim to bridge the gap between mental health factors and legal considerations, supporting informed decision-making.

In the pursuit of justice, we must recognize that mental health is a critical factor that influences behavior and decision-making.

Understanding Forensic Psychology

Example of forensic psychology assessing the complexity of brain-behavior functioning

Forensic psychology plays a pivotal role in addressing the intersection of mental health and the legal system.

For example, when individuals experience significant cognitive and psychological challenges, they might act impulsively, reach inaccurate conclusions, or lack insight into their actions. In the legal context, such behaviors can prompt questions on competency, mental state, and capacity.

By employing a range of assessment and evaluation techniques, forensic psychology aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the psychological factors involved in legal cases.

  2. Collateral Interviews and Record Reviews: In addition to test administration and interpretation, we gather information through collateral interviews and record reviews.
  3. Analysis and Report Writing: The evaluation process involves a thorough analysis of information we have gathered and our written reports provide insight into mental health factors.
  4. Treatment Recommendations: Based on our assessment findings, we provide informed recommendations for treatment planning. We take into account the unique circumstances and needs of individuals, facilitating appropriate interventions and support.

Specialized Forensic Psychology Evaluations

Competency
(Criminal Cases)

Competency evaluations assess an individual’s mental capacity to stand trial, determining if they have the necessary understanding and ability to participate in legal proceedings.

Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI)

NGRI evaluations assess whether an individual’s mental state at the time of the crime prevented them from understanding the nature of their actions or distinguishing right from wrong.

Mental Status at the Time of the Offense

Evaluations for mental status at the time of the offense involve assessing the individual’s mental state during the commission of a crime to determine if they had the capacity to form intent, appreciate the consequences of their actions, or control their behavior due to a mental disorder or impairment.

Capacity
(Civil Cases)

Evaluations in capacity or competency cases in civil court assess an individual’s cognitive and psychological functioning to determine if they possess the necessary mental capacity to understand and participate in legal proceedings related to civil matters such as guardianship or conservatorship.
